This Caribbean Island is a beautiful, touristic spot, visited by many popular and important people, movie stars, politicians and international jet-setters every year. This island is famous for its beaches, resorts and friendly atmosphere. Tourism is a major industry. The Dominican Republic shares the island of "La Hispaniola" with Haiti. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Santo Domingo, its capital,  is the oldest settlement in the West Indies. Diego, son of Christopher Columbus became the first governor of the territory in 1496. It is under his government of the island that its cathedral, first of the Americas, was built.

 

The official language of the island is Spanish. French and German are spoken in some areas, mostly close to the borders with Haiti.  Along with the cathedral, the island boasts the first University in the Americas. The colonial capital is part of UNESCO World Heritage.

 

Highly touristic and with its beautiful beaches, Dominican Republic is home to over 25 beautiful golf resorts. The island is an "it" destination for golf. There are many beautiful resorts, catering to singles, couples, and families. The amazing Caribbean tropical weather makes this island a beach resort all year around. It is one of the paradises to escape in the winter season.

 

Fashion designer Oscar De La Renta was born in the Dominican Republic and until his death kept a residence there. Major Leagues athletes are known Dominicans: Sammy Sosa,  A-Rod, Albert Pujols and others.

Isla Saona is another popular destination of the Dominican Republic. Located in Bayahibe, Isla Saona is part of the protected East National Park with miles of powdery white sand beaches. There are resorts and tour operators in Isla Saona from whom you can pick your activities. From dive shops, snorkel shops, hawkers, and even catamaran and speedboats.

The food and the drinks are another attraction, be sure to taste their "Mangu" and Pinas Coladas. Seafood lovers are in heaven on this island, with their fresh fish, lobster, shrimp!
